OLPP rule is delayed by USDA once again

Posted: November 9, 2017

Today the USDA announced that the Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices rule will be delayed yet again until May 14, 2018. Here are the full details. NOC responded to this announcement with the following statement:

“The National Organic Coalition is deeply alarmed by a decision from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to further delay the long-awaited standards on animal welfare for organic livestock operations,” says Abby Youngblood, executive director at the National Organic Coalition. “The new rules represent more than a decade of work to clarify and improve animal welfare standards in organic and have the support of thousands of stakeholders, including farmers, consumer groups, and members of the organic industry. Consumer trust in the label is vital and assures the success of the organic seal in the marketplace.  It is the USDA’s job to protect the integrity of the organic seal – we urge the administration to allow the rule to go into effect and to respect the wishes of thousands of producers who voluntarily choose to participate in the organic certification program and are overwhelmingly in favor of this new regulation.”
